Officials at Elgin-based Unit School District 46 have unveiled a proposed 2001 tax levy of $161.5 million, a 7.25 percent increase over the previous year’s levy of $150.6 million.

An increase in property values could stave off a property-tax rate increase, district officials said at a Board of Education meeting Monday night.

James Freeman, assistant superintendent of management services, expects that the school district is more likely to see a 5 percent increase in the amount of taxes collected in 2001, compared with the previous year, due in part to new construction.

“We could have enough growth from the [equalized assessed valuation] to have the dollars we want without raising the tax rate,” Freeman said.

If the 5 percent target isn’t met, the district could raise taxes by up to 3.4 percent–the tax cap set by the state for this year.

School officials won’t know what the final 2001 tax rate is until next summer.

A public hearing on the tax levy is scheduled for 7 p.m. Dec. 3 in the district headquarters at 355 E. Chicago St., Elgin. The board will vote on the levy during its Dec. 17 meeting.

In other action the school board accepted a $355,000 bid to Plainfield-based R.L. Sohol for the construction of an addition to Elgin High School’s fieldhouse to accommodate a new girls locker room.

The facility is part of a settlement earlier this month of a federal lawsuit to meet Title IX compliance requiring that facilities be comparable to ones used by boys.
