A state grant will open the stage for a musical performance teaming Lincoln-Way High School students with professional musicians.

A $39,000 grant secured by state Sen. William Mahar, (R-Orland Park), will finance a spring performance by the Illinois Philharmonic Orchestra at Lincoln-Way’s East Campus in Frankfort, the Lincoln-Way School Board announced last week.

Mahar said the grant offers a unique opportunity. “There is nothing like this in my district,” he said. “I wanted the citizens to enjoy the services of the Illinois Philharmonic, and I wanted the students to be able to have the experience of working with this fine orchestra.”

Plans are under way for a similar event in High School District 230 next year.

Lincoln-Way music department Chairman Charles Stark said junior Stacie Kim will play Mozart’s Concerto in G with the orchestra, and another student will narrate Aaron Copland’s “Lincoln Portrait.”

The Lincoln-Way choir and members of a local community chorus also will perform with the orchestra.

The grant will pay for orchestra expenses, a study guide for students and teachers, a concert program and marketing.

Proceeds from ticket sales will go to the Lincoln-Way High School Foundation, a volunteer group that raises money for educational programs, said Stacy Holland, the school’s community relations director.
