The Public Works Committee on Monday approved a project to connect Elmhurst’s and Oak Brook’s water systems so the two towns can share water during emergencies.

Public Works employees noticed that a project to bring water and sewer lines to a townhouse subdivision under construction on the city’s south edge will bring Elmhurst’s water main network within a few feet of Oak Brook’s system. They proposed installing valves to connect the systems while the ground is dug up, City Manager Thomas Borchert said. The work and equipment will cost about $7,000, which Elmhurst and Oak Brook will split evenly, he said.

Public Works employees from either town could open the valves to raise water pressure if it’s disrupted by a fire, a main break or another emergency.

The City Council is scheduled to vote on the proposal Nov. 6.
