Three local children will be honored for heroism in the face of danger.
Alex Nowling, Ricky Martinez and Allie Sponzak will receive awards from the Illinois Fire Inspectors Association at a luncheon Sunday at the William Tell banquet hall in Countryside. All three won the Junior Hero Award from the Village Board and the Lombard Fire Department this year, James Plunket, the department’s public education officer, said.
Alex, 5, called 911 to get help for his mother when he found her unconscious last May. Ricky, 11, the only member of his family who speaks fluent English, evacuated his family and called 911 when their kitchen caught fire last month. Allie, 4, led her 2-year-old sister out of their house to a designated emergency meeting place during a kitchen fire, also last month.
