About 100 residents of Des Plaines’ 1st Ward heard preliminary plans Thursday night for a 30,000-square-foot grocery store developers hope to build northeast of Perry and Lee Streets within a year.
“We’re trying to do this the right way,” said Ald. Patricia Beauvais, who called the hourlong meeting at City Hall.
“There will be proposals, feedback and drawings,” Beauvais said. Marty Norkett, chief executive of Scribcor Capital Development in Evanston, said the grocery plan is being shopped to officials of Jewel Food Stores, Dominick’s Finer Foods and other food retailers.

Norkett said the project could lure an adjacent string of smaller stores. If the development attracts enough tenants, a second floor could be added, he said.
Ron Moore, 64, said he moved into his downtown condominium three years ago in part because earlier plans called for a grocery store.
“I was bamboozled,” Moore said. “Next thing I knew they were talking about more condominiums there. I thought I would walk to a grocery.”
