Up to 60 student-owned bicycles were missing Tuesday after a break-in at a storage trailer at Dundee-Crown High School, 1500 Kings Rd., authorities said.

Police found two broken padlocks on school property Monday, school officials said. Because classes were not held Monday in observance of Columbus Day, school officials did not learn until Tuesday that the locks had secured doors to the stationary trailer at the east side of the school, said Dundee-Crown Principal Robert Whitehouse.

An official estimate of the number of bicycles stolen could not be made until students had been thoroughly canvassed, Whitehouse said Tuesday. An initial police report placed that estimate at 60.

Many of the stolen bicycles were used in physical education cardio-exercise classes, Whitehouse said.

“Some of the bicycles were stored in the trailer by students who live too far from school to ride a bike every day but still participated in the classes,” he said.

The bikes were the only items stolen from the trailer, school officials said.
