Individuals who for years have stocked their freezers and fridges with Market Day Corp. food ordered through their schools, churches or other local organizations will welcome the company’s first store, which closes the gap between order and delivery days.

The store opening comes on the heels of the company’s 25th anniversary. Founder Trudi Temple of Hinsdale developed the Market Day idea of providing brand-name foods at reasonable prices as a way for organizations, mostly schools, to raise money. Orders and distribution are handled by volunteers. A minimum of 10 percent of each Market Day purchase goes back to the participating organizations.

The 1,200-square-foot store opened in mid-September in west suburban Wood Dale. Shoppers can pick up a wide range of convenience foods supplied by companies such as Tyson, Campbell’s, Vienna Beef and Kraft.

“Our new store is for the convenience of customers who want to stock up immediately,” said store manager Holly Parkes. “We carry everything that is offered on the Market Day order sheet (which changes monthly) plus an additional 15 to 20 products per month.”

Ninety percent of Market Day products are frozen; the rest are refrigerated. More than 150 choices, most sold in family-size quantities, include lemon herb chicken steaks (2-pound box of eight for $6.40); beef stew meat cubes (five 1-pound bags, $14.25); and chili-mac cups (four 10-ounce microwavable containers, $7.80).

The Market Day Store is at 1250 N. Mittel Blvd., Wood Dale, 630-775-3444. Store hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. For a list of participating organizations in your area, visit www.marketday.com and click on “sale search.”
