The Mundelein Police Department has won a 2000 International Chiefs of Police/ITT Community Policing Award.
The organization honored the department for its non-traditional approach to community problems. The department won the award, sponsored by ITT Industries, in the category of agencies serving a population of 20,001 to 50,000. It was the only Illinois police department to win the award.”I can’t tell you how not only surprised but how happy everyone was,” Chief Raymond Rose said. “It is a community award, as far as I’m concerned.”
The Police Department’s crime prevention tactics focus on the development of partnerships with community groups. The village has a number of community-policing programs, including Project C.A.P.E.-Mundelein (Creating a Positive Environment), the Mundelein Task Force and two Community Resource Centers.
Rose said the crime rate in Mundelein has fallen almost 39 percent since the department began the community-policing program in 1992.
