Two Zion men have been charged and police are seeking a third in connection with several recent burglaries in the Waukegan area.
Joseph D. Jones, 18, of the 2800 block of Ezra Avenue, and Anthony J. Steward, 17, of the 2800 block of Jethro Avenue, were being held in the Lake County Jail each on $50,000 bond, according to Waukegan Police Capt. Donald Johnson.
Jones is charged with three, and Steward with two, counts of residential burglary in connection with thefts from three homes in the Waukegan area on Aug. 24, Friday and Monday, Johnson said. Police are seeking a third man in connection with the crimes, he said.
Jones and Steward were apprehended in the 1600 block of Berwick Boulevard Tuesday by a Waukegan police officer who stopped the car they were traveling in because it fit the description of a suspicious vehicle seen in the vicinity of the burglaries, Johnson said.
In the vehicle, police recovered electronic equipment, jewelry and 90 to 100 Beanie Babies stolen from the three homes, Johnson said.
Johnson said the burglaries occurred in the 1000 block of Keith Avenue; the 2300 block of North Jackson Street; and the 500 block of Flossmoor Avenue.
The burglars reportedly knocked on residential doors and when no one answered broke into the homes through a back window, Johnson said.
A man who was home when the suspects knocked became suspicious and gave police a description of the suspects’ vehicle, Johnson said.
