During peacetime in the late 19th Century, Samuel N. Waller couldn’t use the same washroom as Teddy Roosevelt. But there he was in the Spanish-American War, fighting at Roosevelt’s side as a U.S. Army 1st sergeant. Waller, an African-American, served 40 years in the service, documenting war and racism by taking photographs and collecting them later in albums. His work is the focal point of “The Buffalo Soldier: The African American Soldier in the U.S. Army,” opening at 9 a.m. Monday at the Chicago Public Library’s lower level, 400 S. State St. Free. 312-747-4875.
