Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

It’s barbecue season–and for more and more people, that involves a propane-fueled gas grill (not necessarily the most familiar piece of equipment in a homeowner’s repertoire). So, for a safe grilling season, the Propane Education & Research Council and the National Propane Gas Association offer these tips:

– Always use the grill outdoors in well-ventilated areas. Garages are no-nos.

– Follow manufacturer’s instructions carefully.

– Before lighting, use a leak-detection solution (available from propane gas suppliers) to check all connections for tightness. Never use matches or lighters to check for leaks.

– Store cylinders upright and vertical, outdoors and away from sources of ignition. Don’t smoke near the unit.

– When you have the cylinder refilled, have the supplier check for dents, damage, rust or leaks.

– Take the refilled cylinder home immediately. Keep your car ventilated and the cylinder valve closed and plugged or capped.

– Make sure the burner controls are turned off and keep the cylinder valve closed when not using the grill.

– When not using the grill, cover disconnected hose-end fittings and burner air intakes with small plastic bags or obtain protective caps from the propane supplier to keep out dirt, insects and moisture.
