A 21-year-old Kane County Jail inmate was charged with unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon this week after guards who patted him down after a visit to the jail’s dentist found a homemade knife in his waistband, said Kane County Sheriff Ken Ramsey.

Christian Garza, of Elgin, was charged with the Class 1 felony after guards found the 9-inch-long, 2-inch-wide knife on Tuesday. Guards removed the knife without incident or injury, the sheriff’s office said.

Garza, who is in jail on domestic battery and obstruction of justice charges, had an additional bond of $300,000 added to his prior bond of $150,000.
