Reps. Douglas Hoeft (R-Elgin) and Thomas Johnson (R-West Chicago) stood behind the Illinois State Board of Education on the issue of detaching from school districts during a Bartlett School Study Advisory Committee meeting Monday.

The committee has spent the past 18 months looking into the feasibility of moving students out of Elgin-based District 46 and creating a new district.

“The State Board of Education has come out with an opinion that it cannot be done without changing the law,” said Hoeft, who added that even if the Village of Bartlett petitioned the state to create its own school district, “it would be sent back” rejected.

Several committee members said they were undaunted in their effort to detach from District 46, which they said is too big to meet the needs of students in Bartlett.

“We have several legal opinions that this (detachment) is legal,” said committee Chairwoman Sherry Bormann. “It is a battle that can be fought.”
