SOMETHING IN COMMON: I recently saw a cartoon in which an Arab says to an Israeli, “Why don’t we concentrate on the things we have in common, like falafel?” It may sound goofy but that is essentially what the Chicago-based Genesis At the Crossroads project is about — bringing together the peoples of the Middle East through culture and art that celebrate the region’s commonality and diversity. This culture and artistry will be on full display Sunday as the first ever Genesis at the Crossroads Festival kicks off at the Chicago Cultural Center. The all-day extravaganza will run from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and showcase the music, dance, photos and food of Arab, Jewish and Persian cultures. Musical performers include Tehran’s instrumental duo Shahin & Sephir, renowned cantorial singer Alberto Mizrahi, Middle Eastern instrumentalists Salaam, Middle Eastern a capella troupe Vida, Baghdad’s tabla master Arsham and Chicago’s lively Maxwell Street Klezmer Band. During a grand finale, all of the instrumentalists will join together on stage to perform an original collaborative composition. Additional treats include Israeli dancing troupes Shoshanim and Yachad, as well as a buffet of tasty snacks from Al Khayam, Andies, Hava Nagila, L’Olive, Olive Mountain, Pars Cove, Reza’s and Taboule. Advance tickets are $20 for adults and $10 for kids 5 to 12; $15-$25 at the door. Children under 5 not permitted. For more information, call 773-929-0224.
