Orland Park may raise its water rates by 4 percent, retroactive to Jan. 1, the day Chicago raised the fees it charges municipalities for Lake Michigan water.

Officials this week enacted an ordinance that increases the fee to $2.33 for incorporated residents and $3.96 for unincorporated residents. The rate is applied to every 1,000 gallons of water used.

The ordinance, tentatively approved by the Village Board’s Finance Committee this week, would not only enact the new rate, but would also automatically adjust rates whenever Chicago increases its rates.

“We just pass along the rates from Chicago,” said Trustee James Dodge.
