In Turkey, they’re called manti and in Korea they’re called mandu. But in Afghanistan — located between Turkey and Korea — these delectable dumplings are called mantu. And although Evanston’s Afghan Fine Cuisine (502 Main St., Evanston; 847-328-7800) serves lots of tasty treats, its mantu are our primary preoccupation when we pay them a visit. These delicate, silver-dollar-sized noodle packets arrive in groups of five, drizzled with a homemade yogurt sauce and spicy red oil. One variety, called aushak, is filled with cooked and seasoned green onions, while the meat mantu is stuffed with a highly flavorful and finely minced ground beef with onions. We could slurp up plates of these things all day.
