A Nov. 1 opening date is scheduled for the portion of the Old Plank Road Trail that runs through New Lenox into Joliet Township.

Work is under way to add that section of an abandoned railroad right of way to the recreation trail that runs through Will and Cook Counties, by way of Frankfort, all the way into Park Forest, according to Bruce Hodgdon, public information officer for the Will County Forest Preserve District.

The paved trail, bordered by greenery, is designed for walking, jogging, bicycling and in-line skating.

The section now under construction will extend from Cedar Road through the village of New Lenox to Park Road in Joliet Township, Hodgdon said.

The Cedar Road terminus will be the kickoff spot for a celebration of the trail on Sept. 26.

Forest Preserve mascot Willie the Woodchuck will provide the sendoff for bicyclists planning to ride the length of the trail.

Celebration activities also include a 5K run in Frankfort.
