A state grant could pay for some increased security at Lincoln-Way High School.
Lincoln-Way Central Principal Jay Johnson said the state’s Safe-to-Learn program provides grants of up to $50,000 for school security measures.
The money would be used to buy additional monitoring devices for areas such as entrances and parking lots, Johnson said.
Johnson said Associate Principal Glen Duckworth is writing the grant proposal seeking funding for added security at the East Campus in Frankfort and the Central Campus in New Lenox.
Duckworth said the district should know before the end of the year whether they will receive grant funding.
Another safety concern occupying school officials is traffic on U.S. Highway 30.
Traffic on the highway is increasing steadily, making the street more dangerous for students to cross to reach the Central Campus.
Bus transportation is provided for students south of the highway, but many prefer to walk to school instead.
