Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

If you’re like us, you sometimes arrive late to the movie theater without having eaten dinner. And when that happens, small dinner-like snacks can come in very handy. Popcorn doesn’t count. That’s why we love the petite beef and chicken turnovers sold at Lake View’s El Mercado Food Mart (3767 N. Southport Ave; 773-477-5020). These dumpling-y, six-bite Argentine snacks called empanaditas make a great quick meal on your way to The Music Box Theatre, or even to a production at the nearby Mercury Theatre. Made with a chewy, flaky dough crust and savory beef or chicken fillings, this diminutive Argentine take on the Pan-Latin American empanada are as delicious as they are discreet. Although we would NEVER advocate bringing outside food into a theater, we have heard that it is possible to quietly munch these mildly spiced snacky packets during a movie without anyone really noticing. We would just recommend having a few napkins on hand.
