Some people still sate their late-night munchies at the venerated White Castle chain, but those in the know head over to their local Korean-Chinese restaurant where spicy chicken wings fly out of the kitchen day and night. We love these dainty “drumsticks” with their meat scrunched up to one end, leaving a convenient little bone handle. Bathed in a sweet, hot pepper-flecked sauce (whose spice level can be adjusted), these deep-fried tasties are one of the top three bestselling items at these eateries, which look like Chinese restaurants on the surface but are really aimed at the Korean community. The two other big items at these restaurants are jal jang myun (noodles in brown sauce) and jam pong (spicy seafood soup), but more about these dishes another day. Some of our favorite spots for spicy wings include Great Beijing, 3254 W. Lawrence Ave. (773-478-9129) and Nan Garden, 5844 W. Dempster St., Morton Grove (847-967-0066). Both places charge about $9 for a two-person order.
