A recent plea for an end to leaf burning in New Lenox was another chapter in a continuing saga for the Village Board.

The question of leaf disposal has surfaced periodically over the past 10 years, Mayor John Nowakowski said.

Resident Sara Meyer said she surveyed about 50 residents in a wooded area on the north side of the village and found a majority favored banning leaf fires.

Leaf smoke poses “obvious health issues,” Meyer said, noting that leaf fires emit pollutants such as hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide and ashes.

Children younger than 10 and people older than 55 are especially susceptible to respiratory distress caused by burning leaves, she said.

The mayor said the question will be revisited by a Village Board committee.
