Itasca School District 10 is considering joining a communitywide effort to promote a youth character-building program.
The school board Wednesday night discussed participation in Character Counts, a program designed to help educate young people about citizenship, honesty and other values.

District officials said that if the program is implemented, they will be working with the village, parent-teacher organizations, the village’s Youth Council and other groups and agencies to get the effort off the ground.
“This is simple and straightforward. These are things we tend to teach in schools but overlook,” said District 10 Supt. Glenn Acksel.
The project already has been implemented by Lombard and Bloomingdale schools, said Neil Schawel, a school board member who proposed that the school district be involved in the project.
“This program is something the community overall should support,” he said. “It represents the character traits the community holds” for itself.
