Mike Taylor said his St. Viator boys soccer team is trying to find itself this season. The Lions, a Class A semifinalist in 1997, started off well but were in the midst of a three-game slide.

But Wednesday night St. Viator finally found a way to win. Tim Grodek scored two goals to lift the Lions to a 2-0 victory over East Suburban Catholic rival and 1997 Class A state runner-up St. Joseph (5-3-1, 1-2) at Forest View’s stadium.

“It’s good to get a win. We needed one,” said Taylor, whose team (7-4-1, 3-1) had lost to St. Charles, Marist and Libertyville in the past week.

Grodek’s first goal came with 26:30 left in the game on a free kick from 20 yards after teammate Steve Chromik was fouled. Vrahram Kadkhodaian’s assist set up Grodek’s second score, a header with 5:22 left.

But the game’s most important play came about a minute after St. Viator, which outshot the Chargers 25-6, had gone up 1-0. St. Joseph’s Joe Tortorich nailed a free kick that St. Viator goalkeeper Justin Brecken swatted away.
