Trustees in Romeoville voted Wednesday night to approve a redevelopment project they said will enhance the appearance of the town’s main highway.
The plan calls for demolishing Tuffy Auto Service Center at Phelps Avenue and Independence Boulevard and replacing it with a larger building that will house the muffler shop and other tenants, including a restaurant, according to Community Development Director Greg Anderson.
The Tuffy Auto Service Center is slated to occupy the south end of the building and Steamer’s Restaurant, a diner with a 1950s and ’60s theme, is expected to occupy the north end of the building. The building will have room for other tenants, as well.
The diner’s theme will fit in with the historic atmosphere village officials would like to see along U.S. Highway 53, formerly a part of U.S. Highway 66.
Keeping Illinois 53 attractive is a priority, according to Mayor Fred Dewald, who noted that the highway is a significant part of the town’s history.
