A plan to link open spaces in New Lenox through a series of greenways is expected to be added to the village’s comprehensive plan.

Consultant Chris Lannert, who conducted the open-space corridor study, said greenway plans are based on a combination of natural features, existing recreational and open space and future open-space donations.

The open-space plan complements the village’s comprehensive plan, which emphasizes incorporating open land into the development process.

The plan also sets priorities, Lannert said, noting that acquiring land along Hickory Creek, which is closer to the developed areas, should be done quickly.

Mayor John Nowakowski said land along Laraway Road also should be earmarked for green space to connect with the Lincoln-Way High School athletic fields under construction at Laraway and Cedar Roads.
