New Lenox on Tuesday night joined the growing ranks of suburbs with regulations to control sexually oriented business ventures.

The village’s business mix does not include establishments such as strip clubs or adult book and video stores. But the new ordinance specifies location, opening and closing times and other details of operation for such ventures. A companion measure defines and prohibits public indecency.

Under the new ordinance, such an adult business must be in an industrially zoned area and must have a special-use permit for operation.

Location is further restricted to areas at least 1,000 feet from schools, day-care centers and houses of worship, and at least 500 feet from parks, residential neighborhoods, the medians of Cedar Road and U.S. Highway 30, the planned extension of Interstate Highway 355, or a similar business.

Such businesses will not be allowed to serve liquor or operate from 1 to 9 a.m.
