A historic and controversial Lemont mural that commemorates the village’s history is safe for at least another few weeks.
A Cook County Circuit Court judge extended on Tuesday a temporary restraining order that bars two business owners from painting over the mural, which covers the wall of their building at 316-318 Canal St.
The order was extended until Sept. 1.
The battle began several years ago when Frances and Robert Brindac sought payment of $5,000 a year from the village for the use of the wall where the mural of Lemont’s quarry workers is painted. They also are asking for back payment of $20,000.
The mural was painted in 1976 and restored in 1993.
