Attention, train lovers, history buffs and railroad-speed freaks!

Now boarding for a first look at the beautifully restored Burlington Pioneer Zephyr, one of the country’s fastest and most famous trains, billed as the world’s first streamlined, diesel-electric, articulated train.

The first public guided tour in the Chicago area will be held on Friday (noon to 6 p.m.) and Saturday (10 a.m. to 6 p.m.) at W.W. Grainger corporate headquarters at 5500 Howard St. in Skokie.

This is a kind of sneak preview before the three-car trainconsisting of a lightweight steel engine, a main passenger car and an observation caris transported to its permanent display site at Chicago’s Museum of Science and Industry.

The train captured world headlines by setting a land speed record on May 26, 1934; it zoomed from Denver to Chicago in just over 13 hours, making the 1,000-mile journey at an average speed of about 77 mph.
