Once again, Jane Austen had it right. Letters are never worth going through the rain for.
Dear Sir:
I wonder what you do to prepare yourself to be a sportswriter? You may have been captain of the dominoes or tiddly winks team. Perhaps a little of the British royalty has rubbed off on you.
–M.E. Johnson, Chicago.
Dear Sir:
Well, maybe the ears.
To Vinegar Mouth:
Wake up! 33 Million! It seems people see it as a blessing that Michael Jordan has condescended to accept an obscene amount of money to play basketball. For that kind of money, he should not need teammates. Add to this, freeloading sportswriters are forever critical of owners who won’t throw around $30 million or $40 million. Writers want to tell owners how to spend millions, while the same writers squeeze nickels.
–Joe Stachura, Norridge.
To Letter Writer:
Is this a great country or what?
Mr. Lincicome:
For you to call Greg Rusedski “a phony Englishman” is ludicrous. Would you, presumably a “genuine” American, call Martina and Monica phony Americans? How about the Changs, the Kwans, the Yamaguchis, just to name a few? For you to become a “genuine” sportswriter, you will have to rise above your nationalistic and patriotic ego and report on sports purely from the sport angle. Anything you add, sarcastically or otherwise, will just detract.
–Dan Staubel, Wilmette.
Mr. Staubel:
Not if I do it right.
Attn: Bernie Lincicome:
Did your mommy keep you from playing sports? You certainly don’t know how to write about Mike Ditka. Didn’t you ever think to give a person a chance to do what they love best? Or maybe you hate your job. Better yet, I hope the clipboard comes in your direction soon. Always a Ditka fan
–Patty, Chicago.
Attn: Patty:
Yeah, I miss him too.
Dear Mr. Lincicome:
I thought your column about Ryne Sandberg was mean-spirited and demeaning. Your statement, “If Sandberg had played any other position but second base, he would be considered much less remarkable” is idiotic. He played and has played second base remarkably well and can be measured against any other great second baseman. I hope the team can find another Sandberg. We don’t need another Sosa. We don’t even need the one we have.
–Mrs. Ronald Gies, Cary.
Dear Mrs. Gies:

Sosa would already be the greatest second baseman ever.
Bernie Lincicome:
You said that for Mike Ditka to flaunt his feminine side was “absolutely ruinous” to a football coach. According to the dictionary, the definition of feminine is “female, of woman or girls.” We’re in the ’90s and I don’t think compassion, tolerance and the milk of human kindness are characteristically feminine any more. To say they are is implying that women can never be good football coaches.
–Simita Rose, Fox Valley.
Simita Rose:
I agree. Women or girls can be autocratic jerks too.
Dear Bernie:
The ’90s were supposed to be a dream decade for White Sox fans, not this total nightmare. Someone needs to hold Jerry Reinsdorf accountable. He has no ability to recognize talent, and when it is obvious, he refuses to acknowledge it. To find out why no one cares, he only has to look in the mirror. Enough is enough. Generations of Sox fans have endured lifetimes of disappointment with this franchise.
–P. Kennedy, Glenview.
Dear P.:
Or 10 minutes with Terry Bevington.
Dear Mr. Lincicome:
Setting aside your use of negativity and cynicism, what good are you doing in trying to sway public opinion against Rick Mirer?
–Kellen Maicher, Chicago.
Dear Mr. Maicher:
If only I had spoken up against Kent Nix.
