Avoiding U.S. Highway 30 is the best travel tip for drivers going through New Lenox on Thursday.
Construction workers replacing the railroad crossing bridge that spans the highway just east of its intersection with Haven Avenue are expected to shut down traffic for at least two hours while they hoist the higher, wider steel beams for the new model.
Setting the heavy beams into place could take longer, Village Engineer Ron Franciskovich said.
He said Laraway Road and Francis Road are among the recommended alternative routes for east-west travel while U.S. 30 is shut down.

“We’ll probably put up a number of signs” pointing out detours for drivers traveling east and west through New Lenox before Illinois Department of Transportation crews working on the bridge project close the highway, Franciskovich said.
