Some curriculum additions are being proposed in Mokena Elementary School District 159, Supt. Roger Reardon told the school board this week.

Kindergartners are being tested for placement in a proposed gifted class for 1st graders in the 1997-98 school year. Placement will be based on both test scores and teacher recommendations, said Mokena Elementary School Principal Barbara Cottingham.

The school has classes for gifted students in grades 2 to 5.

Mokena Junior High School is considering a first-tier Spanish class for 8th graders.

Reardon said school officials can arrange to have a Lincoln-Way High School Spanish teacher come to the junior high to teach the class. Those who complete the class could begin a second year of study in high school, he said.

A meeting to outline the proposal for parents has been scheduled from 7 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Mokena Junior High School.
