New Lenox officials agreed Tuesday to look into a possible ban on leaf burning.
Mayor John Nowakowski asked trustees last week if they would consider the leaf-burning question, which has been resolved differently by two neighboring towns.
In Mokena, where leaf burning has been banned, there are scheduled leaf pickups and leaf dropoff points for residents. In Frankfort, leaf burning is restricted to a small number of days.
Opponents of leaf burning say it is dangerous for those with respiratory illnesses and allergies. Those who oppose a ban say leaf disposal becomes an expense and nuisance if burning is not allowed.
The board cannot ban leaf burning without making provision for leaf disposal, Trustee Dave Batson said: “You have to give people options.”
