A New Lenox traffic study designed to stave off gridlock in the growing town needs more specific recommendations, plan commissioners said Monday night.

Commissioners, who reviewed the first draft of the plan drawn up by consultants from Meridian Engineers and Planners Inc. at a work session, said the document should offer a more detailed analysis of traffic patterns and other situations.

Members of the New Lenox Planning Commission and the Village Board are expected to meet with the consultants over a final draft, possibly next month.

The Plan Commission conducted an initial review of the proposed plan last month and the Village Board conducted a review of its own during a work session last week.

The goal is a traffic plan that will ease congestion along the town’s main thoroughfares, Cedar Road, U.S. Highway 30 and Haven Avenue.

Residents in the older section of the village have opposed the widening of Cedar Road and Haven Avenue because of potential damage to historic homes and mature trees.

Consultants, who held a series of public meetings to gather ideas from residents, have suggested diverting traffic to an outer ring of roads such as Gougar Road to the west, School House Road to the east, U.S. Highway 6 to the north and Laraway Road to the south.
