New Lenox trustees said Tuesday night they want a traffic report that gives them more bang for their buck.

At a work session, they decided to tell consultants from Meridian Engineers and Planners Inc. to refine the first draft of a report intended to stave off roadway gridlock in the growing area.

Village trustees said they want a report with more specific recommendations and projected results of various options.

Trustee Annette Bowden said the initial report “gave no direction. It was extremely vague.”

Meridian, which was hired last year, issued its initial report about a month ago.

The goal is a plan that will ease congestion on the village’s main roads, such as Cedar Road, Haven Avenue and U.S. Highway 30, by shifting traffic to an outer ring of roads.

Residents in the older section of the village along Cedar and Haven have opposed widening those streets because of potential damage to historic homes and mature trees.

Possible outer-ring routes include Gougar Road to the west, School House Road to the east, U.S. Highway 6 to the north and Laraway Road to the south.

Special traffic counts were done on some streets late last year.
