Three new alternatives to the controversial proposed southward extension of Interstate Highway 355 were unveiled Wednesday night by an Illinois State Toll Highway Authority planner.

Lidia Pilecky said the three new possible routes were in response to public concerns that the seven existing possible routes might carry the roadway through heavily populated areas.

“We understand that there is heightened interest in the communities,” Pilecky said during a meeting with members of a southwest suburban regional planning council.

Two of the three new alternatives take a far westerly route before linking up with Interstate Highway 57. The third proposal parallels Interstate Highway 80 and links up with I-57 south of Bruns Road.

The planning council was formed to coordinate a regional response to development and environmental concerns along the route of the proposed south extension of I-355. It consists of representatives from Frankfort, Mokena, New Lenox and Manhattan; Will County; New Lenox and Manhattan Townships; and representatives from area school, park and fire protection districts.
