Proviso West couldn’t do anything right against Oak Park through three quarters in its West Suburban Silver battle Friday night in Hillside. The host Panthers trailed by 21 points heading into the final period.
But the fourth quarter was golden for the Panthers.
Sparked by senior Marrio Golden, who came off the bench to score a career-high 16 points in the fourth quarter, Proviso West pulled out a 63-60 triumph. The Panthers (8-5, 2-2) outscored Oak Park 30-6 in the last quarter and won when Sidney Washington (14 points) hit a buzzer-beating three-pointer that he released before falling out of bounds.
“They had thoroughly outplayed us through three quarters,” Proviso coach Mark Schneider said. “It was like we weren’t even out on the floor. Golden came in and changed things–there is no question about it.”
Jeff Wojtowicz led all scorers with 18 points and teammate Jason Ayers added 14 for Oak Park (9-4, 1-2).
“They switched to a trapping zone defense, and it totally flustered our team,” said Huskies coach Al Allen said. “It was something that you try when nothing else works, and it worked like a charm for them.”
Niles West 55, Evanston 52: Derek Reich (13 points) sank a three-pointer with 6 seconds left to snap a 52-52 tie as the Indians (6-8 overall) captured the Central Surburban South contest. Niles West led 41-21 late in the first half, but Evanston (6-7, 1-2) came back with an 11-0 run in the third quarter. Tim Camastro tied the game with a three-pointer with 18 seconds left. Sheldon Cannon’s 15 points led the Wildkits. Jermaine Newman’s three-pointer at the buzzer fell short.
Said Reich: “As soon as I got the ball, I was going to shoot it, and I knew it was going in.”
Maine South 47, Highland Park 39: Mike Rizzo finished with 14 points and eight rebounds as the Hawks (6-7, 1-2) took an 11-4 lead after one quarter and cruised in the Central Suburban North.
Proviso East 66, Morton 50: Everett Stubblefield (13 points) and Reggie Davis (13) took control during a 22-10 fourth-quarter run to give Proviso East (8-4, 3-0) the West Suburban Gold victory.
York 37, Glenbard West 29: York (9-4, 3-1 West Suburban Silver) held the Toppers (4-7, 0-3) to single-digit scoring in every quarter, though the Dukes were outscored 7-2 in the third. Kelly LeFevour (13 points) sparked York, scoring the game’s first eight points. Tim Stratton finished with 14 points for the victors, who were without guard Jeff Dowiarz (ankle injury).
Glenbard South 65, Oswego 50: Glenbard South won in the Suburban Prairie Red with 14 points apiece from Brad VanDenend and Mike Smith.
St. Francis de Sales 62, Loyola 53: Jerell Parker and Lorenzo Trudo each totaled 12 points for St. Francis de Sales (5-9, 3-3) in the Catholic League South. Peter Lee led all scorers with 18 points for Loyola (3-10, 1-4).
Flower 104, Spalding 55: Jeremy Harris scored 29 points and Jimmy Pounds chipped in 20 for Flower (8-3, 1-1) in its Public Blue West rout.
Chicago Latin 51, North Shore Country Day 33: Dan Houlihan and Max Eisenberg each tallied 16 points for Latin (11-2, 3-1) in the Independent School League.
Luther North 58, Illiana Christian 50: In the Private School League, Nick Gottschalk sparked Luther North (3-12, 5-5) with 15 points.
Downers Grove North 59, Lyons Township 45: John Lackaff scored 21 and Kirk Gromer added 13 to lead Downers North (6-7, 2-2) to the West Suburban Silver victory. Tim O’Connor scored 20 for Lyons.
St. Benedict 63, Holy Trinity 59: Horace Silva led three in double figures with 16 points for St. Benedict (7-6, 2-2), which pulled out the Chicago Prep victory with a 16-0 run to close the game.
Aurora Christian 74, Yorkville 61: Jason Collins (19 points), Jabari Herrell (18) and Rahshawn Lyles (17) helped Aurora Christian (7-4) claim the non-conference victory over Yorkville (8-6).

Naperville Central 59, West Chicago 38: Naperville Central (10-3, 3-0) dominated in the DuPage Valley behind B.J. Ford’s 14 points and Todd Grotbeck’s 12. West Chicago slipped to 10-5, 2-2.
Glenbrook South 70, Waukegan 66: Glenbrook South (8-6, 2-1) took a 48-34 third-quarter lead and held on to triumph in the Central Suburban South. Moses Joseph had 19 points for the Titans. and was matched by Dominique Jones, who had 19 for Waukegan (6-7, 2-1).
Leyden 65, Willowbrook 57: Jim Waichulis (24 points) sank all three of his three-point attempts and added nine steals to help keep Leyden (11-2, 4-0) undefeated in the West Suburban Gold. Jason Kammes (16 points) hit all four of his three-point attempts for Willowbrook (5-9, 0-4).
Manley 58, Marshall 56: The Wildcats (7-5, 2-0) jumped out to a 32-23 halftime lead and held on for the Red West victory as Timothy Smith scored 26 points. Lyn Stevenson’s 18 led the Commandos (8-5, 1-1).
Naperville North 75, Glenbard North 53: Naperville North outscored Glenbard North 27-11 in the third quarter to take control of the DuPage Valley contest. Jon Fisher had 25 points and Henry Domercant added 20 for North.
St. Edward 76, Immaculate Conception 67: Peter Aydt’s 17 points helped St. Edward improve to 11-1 overall and 2-2 in the Suburban Catholic.
Wheaton Academy 76, Walther Lutheran 57: Bruno Peterson’s 24 points enabled Wheaton (10-3, 5-0) to remain perfect in the Private School League. Walther fell to 1-10 and 0-4.
Wheaton North 77, Glenbard East 47: Chris Neibch (25 points) pumped in five three-pointers and Wheaton North (6-7, 2-2) hit on 11 of 16 for the game to earn the DuPage Valley victory.
New Trier 53, Maine East 39: Bob Rosinski, Todd Markman and freshman Matt Lottich each had 12 points as the Trevians (6-6, 3-0 Central Suburban South) continued their turnaround since starting the season with four straight losses. New Trier held East to two second-quarter points.
