Police were searching Monday for a gunman who tied up the manager of a local store before stealing about $7,000 worth of video equipment late Sunday.
The 48-year-old victim told police that as he was closing QED Laser, 502 E. Ogden Ave., at 9:15 p.m. Sunday a man tapped on the window and asked if he could come in to look for a pair of gloves he left there earlier.
The man stepped inside, drew a large caliber semiautomatic handgun and ordered the manager to walk behind the counter and lie down.
The robber placed earphones attached to a compact disc player over the manager’s ears, tied his wrists and ankles together with plastic restraints and placed a cardboard box over his head. Although only one man accosted the manager, the victim told investigators that he believed several other people entered the store after the box was placed over his head, said Westmont Deputy Police Chief Jerry Zywczyk.
The thieves then stole at least $100 in cash from the register, 34 laser disc players and one receiver, police said.
