player ready...Back in 1990, when the Two Way Street Coffee House in Downers Grove turned 20, nearly 50 past and present performers showed up to sing at the non-profit club’s anniversary bash. So, Two Way Street founder and longtime director Dave Humphreys and his all-volunteer staff figured they would get a decent turnout for the folk music mecca’s 25th anniversary concert, set for Nov. 11.
“It was the musicians themselves who were urging us to do a 25th anniversary show, so we assumed there was going to be a certain amount of interest,” Humphreys noted.
But even Humphreys was unprepared for the response to the mailing he and volunteers dispatched this summer to every singer who set foot on the Two Way Street stage, inviting each one to participate in an anniversary concert.
“More than 100 musicians have responded,” Humphreys said. “Besides performers from the Chicago area and the Midwest, we’ve got people coming from Kansas, Maryland, Florida and Pennsylvania. We’re overwhelmed.”
What originally was conceived as a concert has now blossomed into a full-fledged festival, with music to begin in the afternoon and continue through the evening. In addition to main stage performances, the fest will feature children’s activities, jam sessions and music workshops.
The festival will be at the 1st Congregational Church of Downers Grove, 1047 Curtiss St., home to the Two Way Street Coffee House since 1970. Tickets are $6 at the door; children under age 12 will be admitted free.
