Second-baseman Rey Sanchez has an incomplete fracture of the hamate bone in his hand that might require season-ending surgery or being put in a cast for several weeks.
The Cubs will make a decision within 48 hours.
Sanchez has been on the disabled list once with the injury and has been out of the starting lineup 18 of the last 26 games.
No, no, Shawon: Sanchez’s injury stopped Shawon Dunston from getting his wish and being moved out of the No. 2 spot in the batting order. After Sunday’s loss to Colorado, Dunston asked manager Jim Riggleman to take him out of the No. 2 spot for the good of the team. Riggleman thought about it, then decided against making the move.
“Shawon thinks he’s hurting the team there. But I think he’s done a good job,” Riggleman said.

Dunston was hitting .339 with 42 runs batted in when he replaced Sanchez in the No. 2 spot on July 16. He is 20 for 78 (.256) in his last 20 games.
No, no, Hawk: Andre Dawson, one of the classiest players to put on a Cubs uniform, remains popular as the return of “Andre’s Army” in the right-field bleachers showed Tuesday night. But there’s no truth to the rumor that the Cubs are trying to trade for the 41-year-old Marlin so he can end his likely Hall of Fame career a Cub.
Record setter: Mark Grace had a pair of doubles to raise his league-leading total to 43. That sets the Cubs record for left-handed hitters, eclipsing the old mark of 42 set by Charlie Grimm in 1932.
