The Cubs added former St. Louis Cardinals star Joe Magrane to their stockpile of pitchers Saturday. Magrane, a 30-year-old left-hander, signed a minor-league contract. He will report to Mesa, Ariz., to train with the Cubs’ extended spring training club.

Magrane led the National League with a 2.18 earned-run average in 1988. The next season, he had an 18-9 record with the Cardinals. He has a career record of 56-62 with the Cardinals and Angels.

Reality intrudes: The funeral of Kevin Foster’s father Tuesday will delay Foster’s next pitching start from Tuesday to Wednesday in San Francisco. Manager Jim Riggleman said he probably would pitch Jaime Navarro with three days’ rest Tuesday.

“I don’t like to do that,” said Riggleman. “In fact, I have not started a pitcher with three days’ rest since I’ve been managing in the big leagues. But Jaime said he prefers pitching on Tuesday. And if I don’t pitch Navarro on Tuesday, then Steve Trachsel will go too long, from Monday to Monday, between starts.”

Robert Foster died Friday in Chicago. He was 49.

Coming around: Riggleman reported progress on three pitchers undergoing rehabilitation while on the disabled list.

Mike Morgan pitched six innings in his latest outing in extended spring training. Riggleman expects him to pitch “a couple more times” before rejoining the Cubs.

Turk Wendell has pitched twice at Class A Daytona, and his next start may be at Double-A Orlando or Triple-A Iowa.

Anthony Young will be sent to Daytona on Monday to begin his minor-league rehab assignment.
