Despite their repeated requests, firefighters will not be allowed an exception to the village’s “no smoking” policy, trustees said last week.
The policy, in place since January, prohibits smoking in any village building or village-owned vehicle. Although seven village departments-including the Police and Fire Departments-have requested variances to the ordinance, trustees refused all but one request.
Firefighters presented Village Board members with a petition signed by 20 smoking and non-smoking members of the department asking trustees to allow smoking in the department apparatus bays.
But trustees rejected their pleas in a 5-1 vote.
