Residents may pay less to dispose of garbage starting May 1 thanks to the increasing value of recycled goods, officials said. Disposal stickers will cost $1.45, down 5 cents from last year, if the Village Council approves the proposal next week.
Village officials negotiated with hauler Browning Ferris Industries for the lower sticker price because the market for recyclables has soared to $25 per ton this year from $5 per ton last year, said administrative assistant Ellen Dean.
The lower price will be in effect for one year, after which the cost will return to $1.50, said village manager Kurt Bressner. If the value of recycled goods remains high, the village and BFI would discuss keeping the lower price.
