If nothing else, Evanston’s girls basketball team wanted to make sure history didn’t repeat itself Friday against No. 19 Glenbrook South.
It almost did.
“The last time we played Glenbrook, we were up 14 going into the fourth quarter,” said Evanston’s Kate Nash. “They outscored us 27-1. We knew that the fourth quarter was crucial for us.”
This time, Evanston trailed in the Central Suburban South game 34-31 after three quarters. The score was tied after regulation, but Evanston prevailed in overtime to gain a 49-45 victory.
With 3 1/2 minutes left in regulation and Glenbrook (16-7, 5-3) ahead 42-38, the Evanston defense dug in and shut down the hosts. Fuchsia Forrester took over in overtime, scoring four of her 18 points.
Glenbrook’s Dana Leonard, who had scored 27 points the first time the teams met, was held to eight points this game as Nash covered her.
“To me, Kate (Nash) was one of our main defensive stoppers,” said coach Cynthia Bumbry of Evanston (14-8, 6-2). “She played very solidly against Dana.
“In the fourth quarter, we were taking better shots and better care of the ball. In the beginning, we were throwing away a lot of shots. In the fourth quarter and overtime, we wanted to be patient. This game, when the pressure was there, we came together.”
