Mayor Art Schultz said Tuesday he will ask the City Council next week to approve two appointments to the Joliet Housing Authority in order to bring it back to full strength.

Schultz made the announcement after it became public that he notified veteran board member Anton “Tony” Trizna, 83, last week by letter that he would be replaced.

Trizna, whose term had expired last December, had served on the board for more than 16 years and through three administrations. He said he wrote Schultz earlier this year saying he wanted to remain for another term. “He has the right to replace me,” Trizna said, adding that his only complaint was how the mayor handled the situation. “It’s not what you do but the way you do it.”

City Councilman Carl Winterrose, chairman of the authority board, said the mayor’s six-line letter “sounded a little crass to me. I don’t know what his motive is. It’s his shot.”

Schultz said he would also name someone to fill the unexpired term of Kathleen Bolden, who died this year.
