The village could reprise its role as host for a national bike race for the next three years if officials agree to a new contract, commissioners said last week.

Village Council members said they will consider rewarding a three-year grant of $81,000 to Chicago Special Events Management, promoter of the U.S. Pro Criterium and In-Line Championship races. The bike and skating races have been held in Downers Grove for the last three years, bringing in hundreds of thousands of dollars in revenue.

The grant, which would come from the village’s hotel-motel tax fund, would use about $27,000 for each of the next three years to advertise the event, promoters said. The races will be held Aug. 14.

Although some members of the village’s Visitors Advisory Board are worried that the event is too dependent on village funds, Commissioner Marilyn Schnell said the advisory board favors the grant.

Council members are expected to vote on the grant Monday.
