In between the traditional two-steps and the slow waltzes we’ve come to expect, leader Michael Doucet and company offer up a few surprises on “La Danse de la Vie.” The Latin percussion and rubbery bassline of “Zydeco X” are a definite departure, while “La Fille de Quatorze Ans” is driven by a rarity in Cajun music-a solid 4/4 backbeat. Doucet’s endearingly wobbly French vocals and blazing fiddle work mesh with Jimmy Breaux’s bubbly accordion throughout on yet another likely Grammy nominee.
