In case they lose Steve McMichael to free agency, the Bears have contacted Washington defensive tackle Tim Johnson, eight years younger and $200,000 cheaper than McMichael last season.

“I don’t know how enthused they are,” said Johnson’s agent, Brett Senior. “They prefaced their remarks by saying they were concerned about losing McMichael. Tim is not looking to be a contingency for anybody.”

Ted Phillips, Bears’ director of finance, reported no action on any front Thursday.

McMichael surprised Phillips on Wednesday with a demand for a two-year $2.5 million contract.

Johnson, 28, made $400,000 last year as a starter for the Redskins. A six-year veteran, he was obtained from Pittsburgh by the Redskins in a 1990 trade.

Senior said 14 teams besides the Bears have inquired about Johnson.

Muster bid: The Indianapolis Colts have inquired about fullback Brad Muster, one of four Bears starters who are unrestricted free agents. The others are McMichael, quarterback Jim Harbaugh and tackle Keith Van Horne.

Harbaugh continues to negotiate with the Bears, although agent Leigh Steinberg said Thursday another team other than Minnesota “is pressing for a visit.”

The Vikings are covering every base available on the quarterback front after disappointing years by Rich Gannon and Sean Salisbury. Harbaugh is said to be a favorite of coach Dennis Green.

“Our first preference is to return. There is interest in other places, serious and real,” Steinberg said.
