Just how hard does John Elway throw the football?

”You don`t want to call a short swing pass to open the game,” said Denver coach Dan Reeves. ”Just kidding, John, I know you`re standing over there.”

Elway admitted he throws hard. ”But I guarantee you I don`t throw a ball as hard as Bobby Douglass did.”

— The career of running back Joe Morris brightened when the New York Giants discovered he needed glasses three years ago. ”I`ll tell you how bad it was,” said coach Bill Parcells. ”The doctor told us what I could normally see from the 50-yard line in the end zone, he would have to go to the 7-yard line to see.”

Someone pointed out that a running back is supposed to smell the goal line. What does he need to see? ”The ball, for one thing,” Parcells said.

Morris said his eyes had always tested 20-20 until a test in 1984 revealed 20-40. ”I`m a better pass receiver, but my running style has really changed because I can see a lot better,” Morris said.

There are other advantages and disadvantages. ”A lot of people out there you think are good looking are really ugly,” Morris said.

— Philadelphia coach Buddy Ryan, writing a column for USA Today, praised the role of Denver defensive coordinator Joe Collier. ”To me, the most valuable player in the Broncos` defense is the scheme,” Ryan said. ”The system makes better players out of everyone.” Said Collier: ”Anybody can draw up circles and squares. You have to have the players who can play them.”

— If Elway is knocked out of the game, his replacement will be fourth-year pro Gary Kubiak. ”It`s been a great season for John, and I`d like to see him go out on top in the Super Bowl with his best game of the season,” Kubiak said. ”But I am prepared. I`ve been running two plays to every four he runs in practice. If I have to go in, I`ll keep my mouth shut for the first series or two. I know the team is going to wish John was in there. I`m not going to go right in and light them up. If I do play, it will be like a dream come true, a fantasy, especially if I came in and won the game. Nobody wants to go in if you`re 30 points down.”

— Speaking of dreams, Sammy Winder has one, too. The Denver running back dreams of carrying the ball for substantial yardage. ”It was obvious we were going to be a passing team the minute Elway came into the league,” said Winder, who carried 240 times for 789 yards and 9 touchdowns during the regular season. ”I may not make a lot of big gains against the Giant defense, but I think the 4- and 5-yard pops will be there.”

— Denver defensive end Rulon Jones has a theory as to why the Giants are in the Super Bowl rather than Washington. ”The only reason Washington got beat was that the Redskins are very undisciplined,” Jones said. ”We`re very much more disciplined. It seems to me you have to be crazy to get any kind of recognition. It`s too bad you have to do something crazy to be recognized, rather than being recognized for what you do on the field.”

— Former coach George Allen says linebacker Lawrence Taylor of the Giants is ”a Dick Butkus on wheels–bigger, faster and stronger than Butkus.”

— Kenny Hill of the New York Giants described the rationale behind his hit on San Francisco wide receiver Jerry Rice that resulted in a $5,000 fine. ”For people who don`t play the game, I think it`s hard at time to imagine the emotions that are involved,” Hill said. ”We are expected to be good sportsmen while at the same time engaging in an endeavor that requires us to be hostile and aggressive.” Hill graduated from Yale with a degree in molecular biophysics.
