Professor Bethany A. Barratt

August 18, 1972-September 28, 2026

Bethany Barratt was born in Beirut, Lebanon where her father was assigned to the Military Attaché office of the United States Embassy. She spent her childhood in Fayetteville, North Carolina and in 1994 received her B.A. in History at Duke University. She moved to California and entered the University of California, Davis, graduating in 2002 with a Ph.D. in Political Science. She joined the faculty of Roosevelt University, Chicago, as a professor of Political Science. She was additionally appointed Director of Joseph Loundy Human Rights Project. Her research in the fields of Environmental Justice and Human Rights resulted in the publication of four academic volumes and major recognition in her field. Bethany was a world traveler, annually taking her Roosevelt students on study tours to London and the Pacific Northwest, and solo research trips to Sydney, Australia and Uzbekistan. Due to her love of animals, especially cats, she earned a M.A. in Zoology from Miami University and gave countless hours to animal rescue projects. She spent summers as a volunteer Ranger at Yellowstone National Park, where she tracked wolves. Bethany loved California and spending time with family and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Louis Dudzik of Riverside and is survived by her parents, Richard and Elizabeth Barratt, of Monterey, California. Donations in her memory made be made to DuPage Wildlife Conservation Center (Wheaton), St. Chrysostom’s Episcopal Church (Chicago) or Roosevelt University, (Chicago).
