OK. It’s time for John Cusack to come clean.
Some days, he’s hanging out at Wrigley Field singing “Take Me Out to the Ball Game,” cheering on his beloved Cubbies. And some days, he’s hanging out on the other side of town, rooting for the White Sox — especially when they won the 2005 World Series.
“I try to stay away from this Cubs-Sox civil war,” Cusack told Armour & Co. when we caught up with him a few days ago. “I get caught in the crossfire all the time. But I grew up loving both teams.”
Well, in the new horror-thriller “1408,” which opens Friday, Cusack dons a Sox cap. And it wasn’t a prop — it’s from his personal collection. “I decided to pick up a baseball cap that day and happened to go with the Sox,” the Evanston native told us. “I chose that the character would have a Sox cap just for fun.”
Then to Cusack’s credit, he rattled off the names of several former Sox players, including LaMarr Hoyt, Chet Lemon, Mike Squires (yes, even Mike Squires) and former player-manager Don Kessinger, who, die-hard Chicago baseball fans know, played on the South Side after many years on the North Side.
“I used to watch the Sox on TV when I was growing up — when Harry Caray was the announcer,” Cusack told Armour & Co. “I just got to way more Cubs games than Sox games. But I liked both teams. I was into Chicago baseball. Sorry. Shoot me!”
